CEOSS' Work with Children at Risk
Children are a distinctive part of both the Egyptian workforce and city streets; a walk through any industrial neighborhood in
Cairo will quickly verify this claim. Studies indicate that anywhere from 3% to 15% of Egyptian children work, and anywhere from 200,000 – 1,000,000 "street children" live in public spaces, without guardians, shelter, or schooling. According to UNICEF surveys, 86% of these street children identified violence as a major part of their life, and 50% had been exposed to rape in some manner.
CEOSS addresses the myriad of factors that contribute to a child's decision to leave home or school. Working with community-based organizations (CBOs), CEOSS takes a holistic approach to tackling the economic and psychological needs of these children and their families, working to prevent children from dropping out of their schools or moving out of their homes. Further, CEOSS works with street children, re-enrolling them in school or reconciling them to their families. CEOSS advocates on behalf of these children to protect their rights, provide health care, create opportunities for education after working hours, and ensure that working environments are safe and clean.
